In June 1920,  Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba travelled from London to Chelmsford.  She was transported from the train station to a workshop in Essex in a white  Rolls Royce, to take part in the first live public entertainment Broadcast in  the World by a celebrity. Her voice was heard hundreds of miles away by the  lucky few who owned a radio receiver. A collective art duo, KELDA FREE &amp;  DAVID BRAZIER, invited the local radios to broadcast the song sung by Dame Melba  all those years ago, to be heard once again in Southend.</span><br><br><font style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; color: rgb(96, 0, 191);" size="2"><span style="font-weight: bold;">2-3pm - </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">BATHSHEBA SPORLE - performance at UTOPIA CAFE, Unit 2,  Royals</span></font><br><span style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;">BATHSHEBA SPORLE  will</span><span style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;"> be exploring  the culture of violent teens and adults, using her fashion background to build a  sculpture of a full body suit which takes the shape of a very powerful violent  image that she remembers very well from her teen years. The fabric will be  digitally printed with a photograph which she took of the vandalised pier hill  sound sculpture.</span><br><br><font style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; color: rgb(96, 0, 191); font-weight: bold;" size="2">3-5.30pm - NATASHA VICARS live art on the Southend Beach off Marine  Parade (between TWO PEBBLES cafe and the jetty pier, next to Adventure  Island)</font><br><span style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;">Flowers for the sea live art -  Natasha Vicars makes small-scale interactive and participatory live works for a  variety of settings. She is interested in chance as an artistic strategy and in  experiences of solitude in public places. </span><br><span style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;">Flowers for the Sea is a live  art work where she&rsquo;ll be asking visitors to step away from the seaside  entertainments and take a moment to contemplate the sea - source of inspiration  for countless novels and paintings, potent symbol, a body of water to us  unimaginably vast and strong. In doing so, she displaces a tradition from Brazil  and, working from a flower stall on the beach, introduces individual  participants to a practice that involves offering flowers into the  waves.</span><br><br><font style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; color: rgb(96, 0, 191);" size="2"><span style="font-weight: bold;">All day - </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">NATASHA VICARS land art &ndash; site-specific installation  on the Southend Beach off Marine Parade (between TWO PEBBLES cafe and the jetty  pier, next to Adventure Island)</span></font><br><span style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;">Natasha Vicars will be  arriving to Southend early in the morning when the tide is out - in time for  some beach-combing. She will then create an installation (about 9 x 9ft) out of  found elements. The piece will stay on the beach until disassembled by the sea  and beach-goers.</span><br><br><font style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; font-weight: bold;" size="5">SUNDAY 18 JULY </font><br><br><font style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; color: rgb(96, 0, 191); font-weight: bold;" size="2">10-6pm - LAURA KEEBLE </font><br><span style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;">An outdoor sculpture outside  Starbucks on the Southend High Street.</span><br><font style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; color: rgb(96, 0, 191);" size="2"><span style="font-weight: bold;">From 12pm - </span><span style="font-weight: bold;">BIRGIT DEUBNER </span></font><br><span style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif;">A procession led by the artist  will move between the 18 ARTSIDE venues. Beaks will be worn by all participants  of a silent flock&nbsp; expressing curiosity and interest in city locations, people,  and primarily the art venues around which the flock of 'intruders / visitors'  will periodically huddle looking in through the windows, and thus drawing  attention to these places.</span><br><br><span style="font-family: verdana,helvetica,sans-serif; A variety of materials can be used from negatives through to flat items such as grasses, flowers and fabrics.
